Introduction

The journey of the Department of Biology was started in this college in theYear 1950, three years after its establishment on 1st October in 1947. The Department of Zoology emerged as an independent department in the Year 1961 under the supervision of eminent Zoologist Prof. D.N. Roy Chowdhury.

Subsequently in the Year 1970, the University of Calcutta gladly accepted the proposal of starting Honours course in Zoology. It is to be mentioned here that the Hons. Course in Charuchandra College was the first affiliated college under Calcutta University in South Kolkata.

The department had a mention worthy faculty profile in the past years. We are lucky that this department, from its very date of establishment, had the support of many active, eminent and sincere Professors, who have enriched us a lot. Late Asit Kr. Majumder, Late Ajit Kr. Biswas, Late Bimal Kr. Ghosh, Late Samir Das Bhowmik, Prof. Udayan Mukhopadhyay, Dr. Mira Saha, Dr. Bishnupada Saha, Dr. Nabakanta Jana are some of the names. We convey our sincere regards to them.

Presently, the Department of Zoology runs with five Full-Time CSC-appointed Teachers and one State Aided College Teacher.

Passed Students’ Profile:

1. A very good fraction of our ex-students have successfully achieved their placement in different fields.
2. Quite satisfactory number of students have pursued higher studies, usually the Master degree from different universities after passing out the Undergraduate course from our department.
3. A good number of students have succeeded in different competitive examinations like CSIR-NET, SET, GATE, SSC etc.

B.Sc. (Honours) [From the year1970]& B.Sc. (General) in Zoology. Courses in collaboration with other universities: PG Course in Zoology affiliated to Directorate of Distance Education, Vidyasagar University has started in the department from December, 2015.
