Diversity of Students:

Students come from all different categories and communities. Few students come from other states like Manipur, Sikkim etc.

DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES

  • The department conducts Calcutta University Hons. Practical Examinations regularly since 1994.
  • The faculty members are involved in the University Examination Systems (Paper-setting, Moderation, Evaluation, Scrutiny etc.)
  • The faculty members regularly act as supervisor and guide the students in different Field Study Programmes as per C.U. syllabus (both Hons. & General course).
  • Faculty members regularly participate in different Regional/ State Level/ National / International Seminars/ Symposia/ Conferences.
  • The department conducts Seminars from time to time in which eminent scientists in the field of Biological Sciences act as the resource persons. The department also organizes students seminars.
  • The faculty members are involved in different Extra-curricular Activities within and outside the college premises. Dr. Kausiki Chakrabarti, faculty of this department is actively engaged in organizing, training and performing in Odissi dance programmes at different levels. All the faculties regularly encourage the students to get interested beyond the prescribed syllabus for examination.

Organization of Seminars/Conferences/Workshops

A) UGC- sponsored State level Seminaron ‘Marine Biodiversity: its basic and applied aspects’ in collaboration with Zoological survey of India, Kolkata on 14Th February, 2012

B)College- sponsored International Symposium on ‘Child Welfare: A Global Perspective’, in association with IQAC, Charuchandra College, Kolkata and Sarojini Naidu College for Women, Kolkata, on 04.01.2018.

C) Workshop on ‘Real Time PCR’for the students of Zoology organized byDiverse Genomics in association with Department of Zoology, Charuchandra College, Kolkata,  on 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 15th and 16th  February, 2019.

D) Online Extension Lecture (National level) on ‘Principles of Tumour Immunology and Immunotherapy’by eminent speaker from BITS-PILANI, Rajasthan, was organized for UG students of Zoology in collaboration with East Calcutta Girls’ College, Kolkata on July 15, 2020.

E)International Web-Lecture (Part of Extension Programme) on ‘Pharmacological targeting of DNA repair pathways’ by eminent speaker from Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic, was organized for students of Zoology in collaboration with East Calcutta Girls’ College, Kolkata on August 10, 2020.

F)Two-Day International Webinar on ‘Sustainability amidst the COVID19 Pandemic’ jointly organized by Department of Botany and Department of Zoology in Association with IQAC, Charuchandra College on 12th and 13th August, 2020.

G) One-Day National Webinar on ‘Biotechnology for Human Welfare’  organized by Department of Zoology in Association with IQAC, Charuchandra College, Kolkata, West Bengal on 31st August, 2020.

F) Many Departmental Students’ seminars on diverse topics are organised in the Department on regular basis and outdoor academic activities in collaboration with WWF.

Students are encouraged to participate in different inter-college competitions and they      regularly achieve success in many of those events.

13. SWOC ANALYSIS

Strength:

  • Well stocked library with easy access to books by students and teachers.
  • Well-equipped Laboratories and lecture room with Smart-board Projector.
  • Highly qualified teaching faculties associated with research work.
  • Good coordination among teachers and non-teaching staff.
  • Students are enriched by regular interaction with teachers beyond classes.
  • Remedial classes, tutorials, class-tests are taken on regular basis by the faculty members to help the students lagging behind their contemporaries.
  • Regular long and short educational tour and field-studies.
  • Modern Science Laboratory visit by students.
  • Assessment of students in regular interval through class tests.
  • Encouragement of students to be involved in different academic activities

Our Weakness:

  • Inadequacy of space specially in terms of laboratory and smart classroom
  • Lack of full strength permanent faculty
  • Gradually decreasing average student’s standard in both Hons. & General section
  • Lack of proper infrastructure to implement the student and faculty resources to its maximum strength
  • Lack of Alumni association

Opportunities:

  • Small Research/Model Projects can be undertaken by the students

Challenges:

  • Despite scarcity of space, relatively better academic and over-all performance of the students is always aspired for and encouraged.

14. Future Plans:

  • More space for laboratories
  • Further up-gradation of Laboratories targeting PG studies
  • One more Smart Board Projector for Classroom
  • To introduce regular Post Graduate Course in Zoology under University of Calcutta
  • To enrich the stock of the Seminar Library and encourage more regular and frequent participation of the students.
  • To develop RBPT for the students.
  • To inculcate social, moral and ethical values within our students, thus to help them being good citizens.
