Teaching Methods Adopted

  • The curriculum follows the syllabus set by the University of Calcutta. The focus of the faculty goes beyond merely teaching from text books. An endeavor is also made to create literary awareness among the students. Through a close reading of prose, poetry and drama our students are taught to think critically and express that thought written in correct English.
  • Apart from Direct teaching in the classroom, teachers are engaged in explaining lessons not understood by individual students, and checking their written work.
  • The teaching methods adopted are mostly interactive.
  • Class Tests are held to find out if the lectures given in class are being followed.
  • Student Seminars are held to encourage students do their own research.
  • Informal meetings with students are arranged in an effort to get to know them better.
  • Remedial classes are held for students during the summer recess.
  • Since parental guidance and monitoring is essential, the department invites parents to interact with the faculty members for fruitful discussions regarding the development of their children.
  • The students of our department range from those proficient in English to First generation learners who struggle to understand the language. They come from all walks of life and provide a fine eclectic mix.
  • With numerous job offerings and lucrative career prospects, English has become one of the more important subjects in the Humanities in the context of the Indian Human Resource and Developmental scale. We try our best to train our students to be eligible for the job market.
  • Assessment is done through continuous evaluation, end-Semester examinations (as per University norms), terms papers, tutorials and viva-voce examination. The students of the department also partake in the vibrant cultural life on campus, participating in debates, quizzes, and drama performances.
  • According to Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, “The Greatest Minds of the nation may be found on the last bench of the classroom.” Keeping this in mind, the teachers try to reach out to all present in class.
